“Ringing Strong for Our Veterans and Family” is the theme for the 2013 Mid-Year Conference for the Nebraska American Legion Auxiliary. State President Cheryl Vap encourages all members to attend and enjoy the meetings that are scheduled.
This year the conference will be in Nebraska City at the Lied Lodge and Conference Center, Friday through Sunday, Jan. 18-20. Nebraska City Unit 8 is hosting the event. Registration begins Friday at noon, and Saturday and Sunday at 8 a.m.
Friday and Saturday, round-table discussions and guest speakers help fire up the attendees, so they can share ideas of community events and programs.
Topics include chaplain duties, constitution issues, by-laws, poppy making, children and youth activities and parliamentary procedure. Mid-Year Conference is also when members announce their candidacy to run for an office.
Friday night features an auction of items donated by American Legion family members. The money raised will help support Mike Helm’s campaign for the National American Legion Commander position.
On Saturday, high school students will take part in the Constitutional Speech Competition. The top four students from competitions held across the state will compete for a chance at winning the national title. The first-place speaker will win $1,100, the second $700, third $500 and the fourth best will win $300. On Saturday evening, the American Legion will provide a band for entertainment.
Sunday there will be a religious service, and the conference will come to an end at 11:30.
