THE NEWS-PRESS...I began working for the News-Press part time as a sophomore in high school after schools, weekends and summers learning the jobs from bottom to the top. I worked cleaning presses, working in the hot metal room for an number of years, learning how to put the newspaper together everyday and working in the mailroom for a number of years..I also got my crack at running the big press as well..thanks to the late ray duncan and the other guys..dick copehaver, Bill Blumel, Junior Weber. also Don Dixon in makeup and mailroom under the leadership fo Fred Boerner..J Hyde Sweet and his son,Arthur ran a great newspaper. j hyde always let you know when you did a great job.
it was here that i got my first chance to become a sports writer and later sports editor for a number of years..Having a great friendship with theCatholic Father Steinman i began to cover St.Bernards Academy basketball games..one night the News Press sports editor came to a game a little under the weather..He was assisted from the game and i was installed as a writer for the Academy Basketball team...I followed that team and the NC high school games before being named Sports Editor for a number of years...I also worked as an advertising salesman for years before being named Advertising Manager after the late Marie Duncan retired...I spent fulltime from m1954 until 1958 on the staff. and returned in 1960 until moving on in1975.
