Marie Irene Sands, 95, died Jan. 4, 2013 at the Ambassador Nebraska City. She was born on Feb. 18, 1917, at the farm house of her parents, Henry P. and Johanna Dena (Schomerus) Griepenstroh, near Dunbar.
She graduated from Dunbar High School in 1934 and attended beauty school in Omaha. She was a licensed cosmetologist and worked in Nebraska City for several years. She later became a bookkeeper for the F.W. Woolworth store in Nebraska City prior to her marriage.
She married Lawrence M. Sands on Oct. 7, 1947, at St. Benedict Catholic Church. They farmed southwest of Nebraska City until his death in 2002.
She was active in the Bethel United Church of Christ women’s guild, serving in several offices. On Palm Sunday 2012 she was recognized for her 81 years of membership in the church.
She also was active in Otoe County Extension Clubs and was recognized for 25 years of participation. She and her husband were long-time members of a neighborhood card club and belonged to square dance clubs in Syracuse and Nebraska City.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by brother Arnold and brother-in-law Eugene.
She is survived by daughter Deanna Sands, Nebraska City; sisters-in-law Delphine Griepenstroh of Nebraska City and Marian Sand of Syracuse; nephews and nieces, Dean Griepenstroh of Dunbar, Mary Griepenstroh Loftis of Craig, Mike Sand of Alta, Iowa, Pat Sand of Alta, Joe Sand of Syracuse and Mary Sand Kuncl of Lincoln; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 8, at 10:30 a.m. at the Bethel United Church of Christ in Nebraska City with Rev. Rodger Good officiating. Burial will be in the St. Benedict’s Cemetery at Nebraska City.
The family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at Bethel United Church of Christ.
