Earl R. Rice, 96, of Hamburg, Iowa, died Jan. 3, 2013 at Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg. Earl was born on Dec. 12, 1916 in Archer, Neb., to Clyde and Kate (Demel) Rice.
He attended school and worked as a farmhand in the Archer and Central City, Neb. area.
Earl joined the Army on Aug. 4, 1941, at the age of 25. He served with the 463rd Army Air Force Base Unit at Geiger Field in Washington state. He was a Duty Soldier II and a rifle sharpshooter and saw active duty in the East Indies at Papua, New Guinea during the war. While in the service, he achieved the rank of corporal and also received the Good Conduct Medal and the American Defense Service Star. He served four years, 1 month and 23 days.
After the war, Earl moved to Hamburg where he married Delia Rose “Dee” Fullington. He worked for Interstate Nursery until his retirement.
Earl was preceded in death by wife Delia “Dee” Rice on Oct. 24, 1982; son Clyde E. Rice on Feb. 24, 1984; brothers Harold and Ralph; and sister Dorothy Grabowski.
He is survived by brother Wayne Rice of Atlantic, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 7, at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg with Rev. Dan Voigt officiating. Military services will be conducted by the Hamburg American Legion at the funeral home following the services.
Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 7, at the Burke Cemetery north of Central City.
Memorials may be given to the Hamburg American Legion.
