  • The Peru State men's basketball team is in the midst of its Christmas break after amassing a record of 5-7 overall and 0-3 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.

  • The Peru State men's basketball team is in the midst of its Christmas break after amassing a record of 5-7 overall and 0-3 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
    Peru State will be looking to break a four-game losing streak when the team resumes its campaign at 3 p.m. on Dec. 31 at home against Haskell University.
    Also coming up on the post Christmas schedule is a trip to Baker University for a 7:30 p.m. start on Jan. 3. The Bobcats will play Missouri Valley at 4 p.m. on Jan. 5 in the first of a three-game home stand.
    Turning to the action of the last five games, the Bobcats have been competitive in all of the contests.
    Peru State beat St. Mary on Nov. 27 by the score of 74-55.
    The Bobcats controlled the action for most of the game by building 16 point leads in the first and second half.
    Since then, Peru State has lost close games to Mid America Nazerene, Central Methodist, Park University and Culver-Stockton.
    Mid America posted seven more made free throws than the Bobcats in a 75-72 final decision.
    Peru State was within seven points when Central Methodist went on a 16-3 run that put the game out of reach in a 66-50 final.
    Overtime was needed to determine outcome of the game against Park University with the Pirates scoring the first nine points of the extra session on the way to a 73-66 win.
    Peru State was within three points when Culver-Stockton went on a 22-6 run and ended up as an 85-77 winner.
    Stat leaders
    Derrick Williams of St. Joseph, Mo, is the Bobcats leading scorer with 16 points per game. He also leads the team in steals. Richard Oppitz of Topeka, Kan., leads the team in rebounding and blocked shots while Nate Bohy of Mesa, Ariz., leads the Bobcats in assists.
