Gary B. Garey, 81, of Syracuse died Dec. 2, 2012 at his home. He was born June 27, 1931 in Oxford, Neb., to Everett and Mildred (Harlan) Garey. He married Rose Theresa Metz at the First Presbyterian Church in Lincoln.
He worked for the University of Nebraska as a county extension educator for 34 years and for Nebraska Crop Improvement Association for 20 years.
Just a few of his associations were: National Association of Extension 4-H Agents (Treasurer), Gama Sigma Delta – National Agriculture Honor Society Member, Epsilon Sigma Phi member, and president of University of Nebraska Agricultural Alumni & then all Alumni.
Among the honors he received were the Distinguished Service Award as National Association of Extension 4-H Agents, Distinguished Services Award as National Association of County Agricultural Agents, Outstanding Services Award Capitol Pork Producers and Internationally Nebraska Partners Organization where they hosted six Brazilian guests through Partners International 4-H Youth Exchange. One of his proudest accomplishments was being a founding member of the Nebraska Extension 4-H section.
Gary is survived by wife Rose of Syracuse; children Steven (Ann) Garey of Polk, Melinda (Allan) Vyhnalek of Columbus, Kevin (Barbara) Garey of Pyeongtaek, South Korea, and Tammy (Galen) Gerdes of Grand Island; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brother E. Marsden (Marilyn) Garey of Papillion; sister Marolyn (John) Moore of Lincoln; sister-in-law Delores “Bunny” Metz of Overland Park, Kan.; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday. Dec. 6, at United Methodist Church in Syracuse.
