  • Raymond Carl Wellman, 91, died on Nov. 22, 2012 at the Syracuse Good Samaritan Center. He was born on the family farm on April 2, 1921 near Syracuse to Fred and Caroline (Holtgrewe) Wellman.

  •     Raymond Carl Wellman, 91, died on Nov. 22, 2012 at the Syracuse Good Samaritan Center. He was born on the family farm on April 2, 1921 near Syracuse to Fred and Caroline (Holtgrewe) Wellman.
        Raymond was confirmed April 14, 1935 at St. John’s United Church of Christ. From 1942 to 1946 he served in the United States Air Force as an airplane engine mechanic.
        He was married on May 16, 1949 to Lois Gunn at the Congregational Church in Avoca. They lived and worked together for over 30 years on the family farm before moving into Syracuse in 1981. Ray continued to farm until 1995.
        He was a life-time member of St. John’s UCC and served on the church council. He was also a member of American Legion Post 100, Farm Bureau, and served on the County School Board.
        Raymond is survived by wife Lois Wellman; children Diane and Danny Kepler of Omaha and Steven and Susan Wellman of Syracuse; grandchildren Jason and Amy Kepler of Lenexa, Kan., Adam Kepler, New York City, Sarah Wellman and Tyler Wellman, Syracuse; great-grandchild Libby Kepler of Lenexa; sister Mabel Kruse, brother-in-law C.M. Petersen, and sister-in-law Marcia Daffer, all of Syracuse; nieces and nephews.
        He was preceded by sisters-in-law Pansy Berner and Phyllis Petersen and brothers-in-law Paul Berner, Gary Daffer and Joy Kruse.
        Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 26, at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Syracuse with Pastor John Finster officiating. Burial followed at Park Hill Cemetery.
        Pallbearers were Seth Kruse, Brett Kruse, Lynn Berner, John Sutton, Dale Henke and Duane Kepler.
        The family suggests memorials to St. John’s United Church of Christ or the Syracuse Good Samaritan Society.
        Fusselman-Allen-Harvey Funeral Home, Syracuse, was in charge of arrangements.
