  • Virgil C. Blumhorst, 93, of Tecumseh died at Belle Terrace in Tecumseh Nov. 9, 2012. He had lived there since January 2006. He was born March 1, 1919 on a farm near Talmage to Ella (Holscher) and Rudolph Blumhorst.

  • Virgil C. Blumhorst, 93, of Tecumseh died at Belle Terrace in Tecumseh Nov. 9, 2012. He had lived there since January 2006. He was born March 1, 1919 on a farm near Talmage to Ella (Holscher) and Rudolph Blumhorst.
        He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ (Osage).
        He attended rural Otoe County School District 58 and graduated from Syracuse High School in 1937. He received a bachelor of science degree in education in 1941 from the University of Nebraska.
        He entered the Armed Forces in June 1941 and served in the European Theatre as battery commander of an artillery battalion. He received the European African American Theatre Ribbon, World Victory Medal and Distinguished Unit citation. He served until March 18, 1946, attaining the rank of major.
        Virgil married Rose Jazwiec Nov. 28, 1941 at the post chapel at Ft. Sill, Okla.
        Virgil was a member of the Tecumseh City Council. He farmed southeast of Cook for several years then moved to Tecumseh where he taught high school history. He served as mayor of Tecumseh, was active in the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and served as commander of the Bickel-Nelson American Legion Post 360 of Cook. He was chairman of the National Oratorical Speech Contest for 20 years.
        He is survived by wife Rose; several nieces and nephews; cousins Shirley Harms and Donna Belle Dettmer of Syracuse, Neri Holscher of Cook, Marianne Freeman and Verna Holliman of Texas and Donita Pribbeno of Imperial.
        Services were held at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ (Osage) near Cook with Rev. Curtis Rieger officiating. Interment was at the church cemetery.
