Avis Louise Johnson, 87, of Hemet, Calif., died at her home on Nov. 10, 2012. Avis was born Nov. 30, 1924 in Los Angeles to Robert Forrest and Avis Menetta Anspach.
Avis grew up in Iowa and graduated from Hamburg High School in 1942.
Following graduation, Avis followed her older sister, Helen, out to Los Angeles, and lived with her grandfather. After her father died in 1946, Avis met her husband of 48 years, Robert Carlton Johnson, on a blind date. Avis and Bob were married in Los Angeles in July, 1948. After living a short time in Fairbury, Nebraska, they returned to Southern California where they remained to raise three children, Mark Douglas, Clay Marshal and Laura Louise.
Avis was a homemaker while Bob was self-employed as a Texaco gas station owner and service manager for Chevrolet.
Avis enjoyed playing piano by ear, bridge groups, gardening, classic 40’s movies and embroidery. After Bob’s death in July, 1996, she continued to live in Hemet, Calif.
Her sister, Helen, preceded her in death in 2011. Avis is survived by sons Mark Johnson of Hemet and Clay Johnson of San Jacinto, Calif.; daughter Laura Johnson Fox Buchan, of Santa Ana, Calif.; brother-in-law Kent Clary of Hamburg; sister-in-law Peggy Saunders of Sun Valley, Calif.; nephews Shane, Dusty and Brian; nieces Janis, Diana, Kim, Helen, and Lois Ann; daughters-in-law Amy and Deanna; son-in-law Randy; five grandchildren, Robert, Yvonne, Brian, Andrew, and Grant; and her four great grandchildren Jeffrey, Wyatt, Eliana and Jayce.
A graveside service will held Nov. 21 at 2:15 p.m. at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, Calif. An open house for family and friends to celebrate Avis’ life will be held at the home of her daughter, Laura, in Santa Ana, Calif., on Saturday, Dec. 8.
