  • Driver avoids parked car on dark county road, but hits hunters standing in the roadside ditch

  • A driver swerving to avoid a parked vehicle on a county road south of Avoca Wednesday evening hit two hunters who had been standing in a roadside ditch.
    Cass County Sheriff William Brueggemann reports that the car was parked below the crest of a hill on the edge of Van Dorn Street between 108th and 120th streets. Another vehicle traveling on Van Dorn Street came over the hill and the driver observed the parked vehicle in the roadway.
    The 37-year-old driver took evasive action, steered to the right, driving into the ditch to pass the parked car on the right. The car struck a father and son who were standing outside of the parked vehicle.
    One victim is a 28-year-old man from Bakersfield, Calif., the other victim is a 48-year-old man from Kansas. There were several other hunters from Otoe County, inside of the parked car, who were not injured.
    One victim was transported by medical helicopter and the other victim was transported by Weeping Water Rescue, both to Creighton Medical Center in Omaha with undetermined injures.
    The 37 year old driver took evasive action, steered to the right, driving into the ditch, attempting to pass the parked car on the right, and driver collided with two male individuals who were standing out-side of the parked vehicle.
    Avoca fire and Weeping Water rescue were dispatched Nov. 14 at about 6 p.m., 52 minutes after sunset.
