  • Willie Perkins, known locally as Walkin' Willie, was rushed to St. Mary's Community Hospital this afternoon after an incident at the intersection of Central Avenue and 11th Street.
    Witnesses said Perkins was hit by the mirror of a car on the crosswalk, but investigators have not ruled out that he fell down while crossing 11th Street.
    Perkins gained notoriety as a Hamburg resident who regularly walked to Nebraska City.
    Emil Vollman of Douglas Tire surprised Willie in April of 2008 with a birthday cake for his 75th birthday.
    Willie Perkins was surprised on his 75th birthday with this birthday cake from Emil Vollman of Douglas Tire. Perkins was born on April 9, 1933. He said the real surprise is for people who don't know how old he is.
