  • Nebraska City and Dunbar firefighters extinguished a fire Monday morning on a car hauler trailer on the J. Sterling Morton Beltway near Calvary Community Church.
Four vehicles at the rear of the trailer were burning when firefighters arrived around 8 a.m. Fire Chief Alan Viox said several explosions were heard, primarily from burning tires, but also from a fuel tank.
The truck driver from Olathe, Kan., saw smoke and pulled over thinking he might have a flat tire. He called for roadside assistance and went out to take a look.
He told Viox that a wheel bearing was red hot and had ignited the tire on his trailer. The fire spread to a Toyota above and eventually to the other three cars.
The cars were being hauled to Grand Island.
Firefighters used water, trucked from Nebraska City and Dunbar, and 15 gallons of foam to extinguish the fire.
