What is it, a beetle, a pounder or a masher? This wooden utensil was called by many names and could be used for many things. Berries could be squished, sour kraut made, meat pounded or potatoes mashed. It is probably one of the oldest kitchen utensils still in use today. These were handmade early on but later could be purchased from the Montgomery Ward catalog. Wildwood has a large hand hewn potato masher along with the one pictured which is more traditional. Many times this traditional wedding gift was passed to the next generation.
