  • Nebraska City's chance at history will have to wait another week.

    The Pioneer football team entered Friday with the chance to score its third win of the season. It would have been the first time Nebraska City posted at least three wins in a season since 2003, when the squad finished 5-4.

    Waverly collected six Pioneer turnovers on Friday and posted six touchdowns to spoil the Pioneer hopes and win a 42-7 decision.

    Waverly collected six Pioneer turnovers on Friday and posted six touchdowns to spoil the Pioneer hopes and win a 42-7 decision.
    The Vikings got on the board first with a 43-yard interception return for a touchdown.
    Nebraska City struck back and tied the score. Jake Pierce had a 41-yard run and quarterback Jay Sornson connected with Andrew Christiansen on a 16-yard pass play to set up a one-yard scoring run by Pierce.
    Waverly scored on a 61-yard touchdown run and threw a 36-yard touchdown pass before running an interception back 41 yards to the end zone to lead 28-7 at half.
    Nebraska City had promising drives end in Waverly territory twice in the second half. The first of those drives ended up on the Waverly 24-yard line with an interception while the second drive ended at the Viking 28-yard line with Nebraska City turning the ball over on downs.
    Waverly added two touchdowns in the second half, one of them on a 16-yard pass play and another on 28-yard rush.
    With the loss, the Nebraska City team fell to 2-5 on the season, while Waverly moved its record to 3-4.
    Nebraska City will close out the season with one game on the road and one game at home. The Pioneers will travel to play at Platteview next Friday and close out the regular season with a home contest against Plattsmouth on Oct. 19.
