Nebraska crashes claim 26 lives in August

During the month of August 2012, twenty-six persons were killed in traffic crashes on Nebraska roadways, according to data collected by the Nebraska Department of Roads.

• These 26 fatalities occurred in 24 crashes
• Seventeen of the 18 vehicle occupants killed were not using safety belts
• Three of the fatalities occurred on the Interstate, fourteen happened on non-Interstate highways, and nine took place on local roads
• Nineteen of the fatalities occurred in rural locations
• Nine of the fatalities were age 24 or younger
• Five of the fatalities were motorcyclists
• Three of the fatalities were pedestrians
• One of the fatal crashes was a collision with a train
• Six of the fatal crashes were head-on collisions
• There were 20 fatalities in August of 2011.
• Eighty-four of the 106 vehicle occupants killed during 2012 were not wearing safety belts.
