Robert D. Aksamit, 84, of Nebraska City died Sept. 21, 2012 south of Percival, Iowa, as the result of a motor vehicle/train accident. He was born on July 4, 1928 at Gladstone, Neb., to Vaclav “Pete” and Mary (Javorsky) Aksamit.
He graduated from Alexandria High School, Alexandria, Neb., in 1943.
He married Betty Jean Hohensee of Feb. 11, 1950 at Fairbury. The couple shared over 62 years of their lives together before his death. They moved to Nebraska City from Alexandria in 1979.
He was a long-time employee and manager of Bartlett Grain Company and worked for the company for 38 years. Many will remember the daily grain report that he broadcast for years on KNCY Radio.
He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge at Alexandria and served as a volunteer firefighter and school bus driver.
He is survived by wife Betty Aksamit of Nebraska City; sons Kenneth Aksamit and wife Pat of Lincoln, Doug Aksamit and wife Julie of Nebraska City, and Harold Aksamit and wife Stacey of Bolckow, Mo.; daughter Debra Stephenson of San Antonio, Texas; daughter-in-law Mary Anne Aksamit of Bruning; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; brother Chauncey Aksamit and wife Shirley of Bruning; brothers-in-law Vernon Slagle of Falls Church, Va., and Don Hohensee and wife Ann of Lincoln; sisters-in-law Pat Hohensee of Sutton and Bonnie Ford of Boise, Idaho; other family and many friends.
He was preceded by son Kevin Robert Aksamit on May 8, 2007; two brothers and their wives: Roscoe and wife Letha and James and wife Emily; and four sisters and their husbands: Sybla and husband Sidney, Tekla and husband Glen, Joan and Ruby and husband Louis.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 9 a.m. at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City with Pastor David Page officiating. Brian Briley will give the eulogy. Burial will follow in the Wilber Czech Cemetery at Wilber at approximately noon.
The family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City.
