Jack Calvin Gump, 96, of San Diego, Calif., formerly of Nebraska City, died Sept. 6, 2012. He was born on March 17, 1916 in Nebraska City to Ray and Stella (Witty) Gump. He graduated from Nebraska City High School with the class of 1934.
Shortly thereafter, he joined the United Navy and traveled the world over. Chief Jack led a group of sailors during the landing of Normandy in World War II. He served 20 years as a sailor and eventually returned to his beloved ships working in the Bremerton, Wash., ship yards for nearly 20 years.
Jack married Ruth Gump in 1978. Both were active members in the Linda Vista Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by wife Ruth Gump of San Diego; stepson Robert G. Leonard and wife Carole of Arizona; brother Doyle Gump of Lincoln; sister Dorothy Moralle of Bellevue; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded by brothers Leonard Gump and Leslie Gump and sister Willa Hartley.
Graveside memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012 at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City. Complete military services will be conducted by the U.S. Navy Funeral Honors Detail.
