The Nebraska City volleyball team delivered that present to Pioneer player Abbie Marshall on Thursday night by defeating Falls City, in straight sets, and Auburn, in a three-set match, 25-9, 21-25, 25-18.
Marshall and Blair Benton were stars at the service line for the Pioneers in the first set. Benton served five straight points early, including an ace, and Marshall capped the frame with an eight-point service run.
Katie Zech, whose kill set up Marshall to serve out the set, added two more kills to help get the Pioneers in position for a kill on the 25th point by Benton.
A kill by Kristi Lant put the Pioneers ahead 6-5 in the second set before Auburn got a sideout and went on a four-point run to take control of the frame. Nebraska City rallied later in the second, but Auburn closed it out and evened the match at one set each.
Lant returned in the third set with a kill that evened the score at 7-7. She would then add three more kills to help the Pioneers to a 13-8 lead.
She added another kill later and her service ace gave Nebraska City it's 24th point of the set. An Auburn hitting error provided the 25th point and closed out the match.
With the win, Nebraska City raised its record to 4-6.
