  • The Otoe County Sheriff's Office is hoping to learn more about an accident at the south intersection of the J. Sterling Morton Beltway that killed a 64-year-old Nebraska City.
Richard Fairbanks was driving a 1997 Buick Lesabre south on 11th Street and was crossing the westbound lanes of Highway 2. A westbound truck and semi-trailer driven by Theresa K. Beckmann, 61, of Morrison, Ill., struck the Buick on the driver's side.
Sheriff deputies say  they did not talk with anyone who might have been stopped in traffic on 11th Street with Fairbanks.
Chief Deputy Mike Holland is asking anyone who was southbound on 11th Street at the time of the accident, at 12:20 a.m., to contact the sheriff's office.
Some witnesses have told investigators that it appeared that Fairbanks was talking on a cellular telephone prior to the collision.
Nebraska City Fire and EMS removed the passenger side doors and peeled back the roof to get Fairbanks free of the vehicle.
He died at St. Mary's Community Hospital.
The driver of the truck appeared to be uninjured.
