The Otoe County Sheriff's Office is alerting citizens of a telephone scam involving demands for payments of court fines and fees.
Deputies received a call Wednesday night from a woman whose mother was scammed from a small amount of money.
The caller used a cellular phone application disguised as the sheriff's office phone number. Callers are identifying themselves at Otoe County deputies and threating to arrest people for fraud if they do not send money.
The scammers are telling people to call an 805 area code number to settle the case.
Chief Deputy Mike Holland said the sheriff’s office will never contact anyone by telephone requesting to send money.
Court fines and such are collected through an arrest warrant being issued, and money collected through court executions are collected by deputies personally serving the person.
