John C. Ashbaugh, 80, of Nebraska City died Aug. 9, 2012. He was born on Aug. 28, 1931 at Griswold, Iowa, to Charles LaVern and Leona May (Kirby) Ashbaugh. He married Helen Dorothy Winkler on Jan. 22, 1972 in Nebraska City.
John farmed and helped various farmers in southwest Iowa. He also served as manager at gas stations in Emerson, Iowa, and Red Oak, Iowa. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #968 in Nebraska City, a life member of the D.A.V., life member of the V.F.W; life member of the American Legion and an active member of the 40 & 8 as well as AARP. John served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War serving in Germany. He entered service in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1953.
He is survived by wife Helen Ashbaugh of Nebraska City; children Rebecca Lynn Graham of Mineola, Texas, Johnny Carl Ashbaugh, Jr. of Mineola, and Jenita Marie Ashbaugh of Lexington, N.C.; grandchildren Brandi White, Tammie Moyer and Ed Moyer and wife Whitney; five great-grandchildren; sister Eloise Hays of Omaha; other family and many friends.
He was preceded by brother Arthur Gene Ashbaugh and sister Violet Marie Grote.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 13, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Nebraska City with Rev. Keith Hunt officiating. Burial will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Grant Cemetery, Grant, Iowa, with complete military honors.
The family will greet friends from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City.
Memorials may be given to the Otoe County Veterans Van Fund.
