A snowman outside of Bremer Agency Century 21 in downtown Nebraska City is intended to put a humorous spin on the July heat wave.

Mike Riege of Nebraska City carved the snowman from the log of a linden tree. It is complete with tophat, twig arms from a pine tree, marble eyes, buttons and a fabulous smile.

Riege, who has been trying his hand at wood carvings of bears, said the idea for the snowman came out of the record heat. "It was a way to put some humor in the 100 degree temps," he said.

The snowman appeared downtown on July 23 and has withstood the heat since. It even withstood a rainfall Wednesday.
