A fantastic pitching performance by Kestyn Lee put the Nebraska City Juniors in position to force a second championship game Wednesday night during action at the Class B Area Two tournament at Plattsmouth.
Stranded base runners and a couple of big innings by Gretna were too much to overcome, however, as the Dragons won 7-2 and clinched a spot in the Class B State Tournament, which will be played next week in Chadron.
Gretna scored four runs in the third inning and added three more in the sixth inning.
Lee opened the game on the mound and was in control, particularly early on in the game when he struck out six of the first nine batters he faced.
Gretna scored two runs on errors and two more on one big hit, a triple, in the third inning.
The Dragons got their sixth inning runs on an RBI double and a two RBI single.
Offensively, Nebraska City threatened in every inning of the contest.
Lee hit an RBI single in the fourth inning.
Brett Kochanowicz came up to bat with two outs in the fourth inning and the bases loaded. A past ball resulted in a play at the plate and Trey Denniston was called out on a very close play.
Kochanowicz returned to the plate at the start of the next inning and hit a lead off double. He would later score on a Chris Monaghan RBI double.
The Class B Area One Seniors tournament begins Friday in Nebraska City with the host team taking on Norris at 8 p.m.
