  • A water main in Nebraska City burst Friday afternoon just as firefighters were using a fire hydrant down the line to battle a straw fire out of town.
Fire threatened about 200 ton bales of oat straw at the Gregg and Paula Ramold farm six miles northwest of Nebraska City and firefighters were relying on water carried by tankers. The tankers were using a fire hydrant near Larson Motors when the break in the main occurred.
Nebraska City Utilities reports that the break was just across a driveway from the fire hydrant that firefighters were using, but it was not caused by the activity.
Tanker trucks from Nebraska City, Union and Dunbar  switched to a hydrant near the Ambassador, while crews set to repairing the break.
