A seven-run, four-hit fifth inning pushed the Nishnabotna baseball team to its second win in the last three games during home action against Stanton on Thursday night.
Nishnabotna trailed early in the game 5-1, but stormed back and, with the help of their big fifth inning, the Blue Devils began to distance themselves from the visiting Vikings en route to a 15-10 final margin of victory.
“The middle of our order got going a little bit and starting hitting it on a line,” said Coach Blair Homan.
Batting has been improving.
Coach Homan said the Blue Devils struck out 16 times in a game early in the season and has been working hard to correct that.
“That is the thing that we stress is to put the ball in play and we will be alright,” said Homan.
Pitching was a big key to the Thursday win as well.
Riley Scroggie threw 138 pitches on the night and fought through struggles, particularly early.
“I really thought he got better as the game went along,” said Homan. “He bore down when he needed to and got outs.”
The Blue Devils are scheduled to return to action at Clarinda Academy on Friday and at Mt. Ayr on Saturday.
