  • After enduring the sting of a tough loss to Beatrice on Thursday, the Nebraska City American Legion Seniors baseball team bounced back and swept decisions against Falls City and Auburn to win the Calvert Sheridan Days Tournament on Saturday and Sunday at Auburn.
    Both decisions were close ones as the Seniors beat Falls City 4-3 and took down the host team, 5-2.
    Those results raised Nebraska City’s season mark to 3-1.
    NC 4, Falls City 3
    Trever Kreifel hit a towing three-run walk off homer to left field in the seventh inning to push the Seniors past Falls City in opening round action at Auburn on Saturday.
    Nebraska City’s only other score of the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning.
    Tanner Faris reached base on a triple and scored on an RBI sacrifice by Kreifel. Kreifel also had one other hit. Faris had three hits on the game while Rob Beasterfield and Gabe Sammons had one each.
    Faris and Kreifel also combined to pitch the win. Faris started on the mound, worked four frames, struck out seven, walked two and allowed two earned runs on six hits.
    Kreifel worked three innings of shut out ball and struck out two.
    NC 5, Auburn 2
    Gabe Sammons pitched 11 strikeouts, walked just four and allowed two unearned runs on two hits in the Seniors championship game win over tourney host Auburn on Sunday.
    Trever Kreifel struck out three in 1.1 innings of releif and was credited with the save.
    Nebraska City struck for three runs in the fifth inning and ended up with five runs on nine hits.
    Kreifel had three hits including a triple, two RBI and a run scored and Tanner Faris had three hits, an RBI and two runs scored. Jake Pierce had a double while Bladen Bales and  Josh Peterson had one hit.
    Beatrice 4, NC 3
    A two-out RBI hit by Beatrice in the top of the sixth inning provided a slim margin of victory for the visiting team on May 24.
    Nebraska City scored three runs, all of that coming in the first inning, and ended up with five hits on the game.
    Tanner Faris had two hits, one of them being a double. Other hits were by Bladen Bales, Trever Kreifel and Brett Sasse.
    Trevor Rinne pitched 10 strikeouts  in five frames and allowed just two earned runs on eight hits.
