Jake Pierce got a valuable life-lesson Monday night in leading the Pioneers past Douglas County West.
Be a straight shooter.
Pierce ended up pitching a gem after being burned early on curve balls thrown to Douglas County West batters who were trailing in the ball-strike count.
Douglas County West hit 1-2 counts for a double and a home run. And Pierce hit a batter with a 1-2 curve ball.
After taking the curve ball out of his repertoire, Pierce cruised.
He recorded every out by way of strikeout going into the seventh inning before inducing an out on a ground out to the mound and another out on a pop up.
The last out, appropriately enough, came by strikeout.
Pierce ended up with 19 strikeouts and three earned runs on four hits, two walks and two hit batsmen.
Offensively, the Nebraska City team had seven runs on eight hits to win the game by a final of 7-3.
Offensive leaders were Brett Sasse, three singles, two runs scored and an RBI; Tanner Faris, double, single, RBI and run scored; Jake Pierce, single, walk, and RBI; Tommie Knapp, single, walk, and run scored; Trever Kreifel, walk and single; Nick Behrends, run scored; Trevor Chaney, two walks, run scored; Jacob Martens, run scored; and Josh Peterson, walk.
