Edward Kohout, Jr., 92, of Friend, died Sept. 29, 2010 in Lincoln.


Edward Kohout, Jr., 92, of Friend, died Sept. 29, 2010 in Lincoln. He was born near Friend on Sept. 11, 1918.

He was a farmer and served in the Army during World War II.  He married Alma Jirsa on Feb. 18, 1947 in Wilber.

They enjoyed farming and raised crops, cattle and hogs on their farm near Friend.

Edward was a member of the United Church of Christ and the American Legion Ford-Banka Post #183, both of Friend.  He was an excellent drawer, self-taught carpenter and was proud of the improvements he made to their home and farm.   He was proud to be part of the early changes in farming involving irrigation, such as when he drilled his first well in 1956 on his land near Turkey Creek.  

He is survived by his wife, Alma Kohout, Friend; daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Jerry Gieseking, Nebraska City; son, Calvin Kohout, Friend; four grandchildren and spouses, Robyn and Tim Brown, Sackets Harbor, N.Y., Laura and Brenton Thomas, Brattleboro, Vt., Bonnie and Jeremy Nerud, Dorchester, Brian Kohout and fiance, and Kelli Eret, Crete; great-grandson Thor Nerud; nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded by an infant daughter; infant granddaughter, Hope Gieseking; and brothers Lumir and Ernest Kohout.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2, at the United Church of Christ, Friend, with Rev. Tim and Ginny Adams officiating.  Interment will be in the Northfork Cemetery, rural Wilber, with military services conducted by the Friend American Legion Ford-Banka Post #183.  

Visitation will be on Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Friend and one hour prior to service at church.  
Memorials have been established to the church.
